T8GP Presents: From the Kitchen of Cookie Bear-Bannock Recipe

Authored By: Andrea Deleeuw

January 26, 2019

Recipe Credit: Bernadette Smith AKA. Cookie Bear

For those of you who have been following the T8GP blog since it’s launch last month, you've probably already read my story where I shared about being moved to tears when I was offered bannock by local Elder Bernadette Smith, AKA Cookie Bear. Her gentle act of kindness made such an impact on me and it’s a moment I will never forget.

I asked Cookie for permission to share her recipe with T8GP because I know that a good bannock recipe can be hard to come by. There are a few reasons for this.

For starters, many of the old ones never used written recipes. They cooked from memory. And there are many of us who never got a chance to learn before our parents or grandparents passed on.

Also, bannock is made a little different depending on where you’re from. A quick google search brings up baked dough in all different shades, textures, and shapes—how can we know which recipe to trust?

For those reasons and more, I’m so glad Cookie agreed to share her recipe.

If you have been on the hunt for a bannock recipe that reminds you of home, look no further….
